In 2024 I was commissioned by the Kroger company to build a large-scale painting for their new store in Louisville KY. The goal of the artwork was to capture the spirit of the Ballardsville neighborhood, and stand as an artistic expression of residents' voices.
The initial digital concept.
The finished piece. This piece is constructed on custom six, 4x8 foot hardwood panels. It uses acrylic, inks, oils, and spray paint.
"Echoes" is a mural that intricately weaves together the diverse and rich heritage of Ballardsville, celebrating the industries, natural beauty, and historical elements that define this vibrant community. At the heart of the mural, a galloping thoroughbred symbolizes the spirit and vitality of Ballardsville, racing through the mountains that frame our landscape. This dynamic image captures the essence of the area's renowned equestrian culture, a cornerstone of our identity.

Above the bees, golden stalks of wheat stretch towards the sky, representing the vital farming industry that sustains us and the thriving spirits market that brings our produce to life. The wheat signifies not only sustenance but also the craftsmanship and tradition of local distilleries, an integral part of our heritage.

Prominently featured in the mural are the twin spires of Churchill Downs, a beacon of Kentucky's rich horse racing tradition. This iconic landmark connects our local culture to the global stage, symbolizing pride and prestige. Alongside the spires, the vivid depiction of roses pays tribute to the legendary roses crafted at Kroger, which grace the neck of every Kentucky Derby winner. Together, these elements honor Ballardsville's contributions to a tradition celebrated by millions.

Throughout the piece, honey bees flit between elements, symbolizing nature's unsung heroes. These industrious creatures are indispensable to all our industries, pollinating the flora and fauna that sustain our ecosystems and our livelihoods. Their presence in the mural is a tribute to their crucial role in the balance and bounty of our natural world.

Finally, Flowing through the composition is the Ohio River, depicted as a lifeline that has historically supported the infrastructure and trade of Ballardsville. The river's currents carry with them stories of commerce, culture, and connection, underscoring its importance in our past and present.

"Echoes" is more than a mural; it is a visual symphony that celebrates the interconnectedness of our community’s industries, natural wonders, and historical roots. It stands as a vibrant testament to the pride and unity of Ballardsville, a place where the echoes of our past continue to shape the promise of our future.
